Default Phal equastris

I just picked up a Phal equastris keiki. It is in a 2 1/4" pot and the
leaves are about 2.5" in length, all 3 of them . How long (generally)
does it take for a keiki to bloom?

For equestris, that is blooming size. It may not bloom this season,
but there is no reason it couldn't. Yes, it will bloom better when it
is a little bigger, but this species never gets huge.

No way to generalize for all keikis. Phal. gigantea keikis will
take longer to reach blooming size than Phal. equestris keikis. For
obvious reasons... But, keikis tend to grow a little faster than seedlings.

Hi, Mariana,

I can't speak directly about equestris as I don't have one, but here's some
general Phal keiki info based on my own experience.

When a keiki has been allowed to develop a good root system and healthy
leaves before being removed from the parent plant, I've found that it will
bloom on the same schedule as the parent. In a few cases, they've bloomed
pretty much right away for me. I have one in spike right now, along side
the parent; both spikes are about the same size, though the keiki is a
smaller plant.

OTOH, if the keiki is removed prior to development, I generally don't see a
bloom for another year or two.

HTH

If the parent plant is small, it is blooming size. If the parent plant is
large, it may take a little longer. There are some very large P. equestris
plants, it's amazing the difference in size between the smallest (4" across)
and largest (easily over a foot across) plants that I have seen.

They bloom while small, but they do grow to be fair size plants. I
have one with a span of 20". Al has posted a picture of one of his
that probably is larger than that.

Mariana,
I got my phal equestris in mid June, and it was a keiki until then. It
started flowering in November, so that would be about 5 months later. It was
in bloom for three months. I have not cut off the spike, which is still
green, and so I am hoping that it might keiki. Since phal equestris is free
blooming, my understanding is that it does not have a fixed flowering
season. It is a delightful species.
Best,
Joanna

Mariana,

Often the keikis on this species will bloom while on the mother plant. When
it gets established it will bloom. I would not be surprised if it blooms
this year. It's one of my favorites.
