Question on Phal keikei (sp?)
Hi!
I've got a phal in bloom with a new spike & last year's spike. At the tip of last year's spike is a plant about 4 inches across. It's got 4 leaves & appears quite healthy, but it has no roots. Any suggestions on how to get roots to develop? I know there is a rooting paste from Canada. Any home remedies? Thank you! Question on Phal keikei (sp?)
Alex,
How long has this keiki been growing? From what I have heard some keikis just grow leaves for a while and develop roots only later. Make sure not to separate keiki from mother plant until it has enough roots though. My understanding is that it needs to have at least 4 inches of root(s) total -- thus, two 2-inch roots or four 1-inch roots, etc. When my Phal had a keiki I think it took several months for it to develop roots that were long enough, and I tend to be impatient. From what I have heard and read about Phal keikis as long as the mother plant is not showing any signs of strain it is alright to leave the keiki on as long as needed, even if it is longer that expected by us impatient humans. Question on Phal keikei (sp?)
Hi, Alex,
Don't remove the plantlet unless the roots are at least 2 inches. Once I had a water cultured phal plantlet produce leaves and tiny roots; however, once I potted the keiki it died. One way of encouraging roots may be to wrap a bit of moss around the base. If it were not a phal, I would say to allow the plantlet to softly touch the potting mix in order for it to send down its roots. Nevertheless, you, indeed, have a confusing situation as usually keikis will send out roots rather than leaves. Also, sometimes ROOTONE found at Walmart and drug stores will help encourage root growth. .. . . Question on Phal keikei (sp?)
Hi ya Alex, I would carefully try to bend but not break the spike, over to
another pot of mix so that the keiki is over the pot. You may have to put a pot upside down with the pot of new mix on top then get a clothes pin & a stake to keep the old spike in place. Hope this makes sense? -- Cheers Wendy Remove PETERPAN for email reply wrote in message ... : Hi! : I've got a phal in bloom with a new spike & last year's spike.
