All,
Would you mind sharing with me what your societies charge for annual dues? We are considering raising our dues by a bit (I think they are very low for what the society provides), and it would be nice to have information for comparison. TIA Diana |

Now, *that* is funny!
We were discussing at the board meeting today how much value members are getting for $15/single or $20/couple annually. Of course, dues alone will never cover the cost of operation (though maybe they should cover more of it, at least). But looking at the numbers makes it obvious that we are too low. Or at least make sure the treasurer knows about that bill :-)
I think we're one of the higher priced societies, $30 individual / $45 family. It was a little lower than that when I joined the society in 2001, don't remember the old prices. -danny "K Barrett" wrote in message . .. LOL!! Looks like we have to up our dues to pay for our web page! K |

Our dues at the current rate pretty much cover the speaker budget, and
that's about it. The other expenses have to get covered by the auction, raffle table, the annual show, interest on our reserves, etc. -danny "Diana Kulaga" wrote in message . .. Now, *that* is funny! Diana,
San Francisco is $25/yr and that barely covers the newsletter cost. We make most of our money from our big show, the Pacific Orchid Exposition. I think we've got around 300 dues paying members. A small percentage of those are life members. Anyone who serves as President gets a lifetime membership, along with a small number of folks who bought lifetime memberships during a short period years ago when the society actually offered them for sale! We're lucky - there are about 10 societies in the Bay Area. Frequently a group of societies here will fly in a speaker and share the cost of the plane ticket. Our speakers are typically from outside the region and we usually have at least one international speaker a year, sometimes 2 or 3. The dues were lower than $25 when I first joined. I've heard through the grapevine that we lost a lot of members when it went up to $25. They must've been those folks who don't attend meetings, because the show and tell table and general meeting attendance never dipped. -Eric in SF www.orchidphotos.org "Diana Kulaga" wrote in message . .. I'm hearing a range of $20-$25 for a single membership as I ask around.
Danny, I answered you yesterday, but I don't see it here. Anyhow, we, too, depend mainly on shows, raffles, etc to cover costs. Dues will never handle it. Our past presidents are also lifetime members, as are a handful of oldsters to whom we extended that status because of a combination of long time service and our knowledge of their financial status. Once I have implemented a change in how the newsletter is delivered (by December) that will save us some $$$. Diana |

Anyhow, we, too, depend mainly on shows, raffles, etc to cover costs. Dues will never handle it. Our Dues are 20 single - 30 household. Note the definition. It pays basically only for the "Christmas plant" that each member is entitled to take home from the Annual meeting (potluck dinner) in December. As treasurer we tried to make fund raisers work, but most of the society think the Summer Event is to break even. Our spring show is our big money raiser. We are the vendor for all the plants sold. The local grower now contracts to supply the same type of plants (beginner & showier phals in bloom) for the price we were paying the Hawaiian growers. He thus gets his label with his address and phone into more homes. He brings in the plants earlier so they have less "travel fatigue" and takes back any over stock so we can have more and not discount Sunday afternoon's sales. Meeting raffles hardly ever break even. Our Honorary memberships are board designated and go to old long time members. SuE http://orchids.legolas.org/gallery/orchids |
