I've diagnosed the problem I've been having with my phalanenopsis/doritis
leaves as thrips (confirmed at orchid society meeting). What's a good treatment to get rid of the little sapsuckers? Richard |

Fortunately, any decent insecticide is pretty effective against them.
Favorites in my orchid "medicine cabinet" include Orthene (acephate) and Merit (imidicloprid). There are a few "Bayer Advanced" formulas available at places like Lowes that contain the latter. I am also a big fan of insect growth regulators (IGR) like Enstar II (s-kinoprene), which work by preventing the maturing of all stages of insect growth. No maturation = no reproduction = death of the population, with the added benefit of not allowing the possibility of resistance development and the emergence of strains of insects immune to insecticides. In truth, when I am forced to resort to the "big gums", I often mix Enstar II with one of the two insecticides I listed. -- Ray Barkalow - First Rays Orchids - www.firstrays.com Plants, Supplies, Artwork, Books and Lots of Free Info! There are a few "Bayer Advanced" formulas available at places like Lowes that contain the latter. Hardware stores around here sell acephate as "Ortho Systemic Insect Killer". It is a cocktail of Orthene and a miteacide. Label says that it was formerly "Isotox", but I bet it is not the same Kelthane. I could not find straight Orthene in the stores I checked. For Richard's problem I think the miteacide is a good idea any way. I do not know thrip problems on Phal leaves, but maybe that is because this time of year I am always on the lookout for thrips and thrip damage on the flowers. Pat |
