This is a pic I took this AM in the tomato patch before starting again
today on this project. That's a used 'hot dog cart' refrigerator ("throw it out - it takes up too much room"), part of a used bathroom tub surround panel from my bathroom re-do of last summer ("It's trash - get rid of it"), and half of a used hydroponic set-up ("how long you gonna keep THAT?"). With some other parts not shown, they have become part of a disa flowtable set-up. I have to get this thing done before leaving for Redlands Thursday AM. My roommate cannot be counted on to water the disas at least once daily with cold rainwater every day while I'm gone. So, there's a tub of 55degF rainwater in the fridge which will circulate up into the orange tub which is now atop the fridge, fill to a level of about 2.5" for an hour then shut off, drain, and repeat in three hours. I'm really hoping this works as for the first time ever I have six disas in spike at once - and at the right time of year! It's a tough thing, raising disas here in OH where the winters are too cold and and the rest of the year too hot for them. I have built a 'canopy' over the whole assemblage covered with plexiglass to keep the monsoon-like thunderstorm rains we get from crushing the plants (same reason the tomatoes aren't set out yet) and from getting to the exposed rear mechanics of the fridge. Left to do: put new plugs on the cords (fridge and pump) which have been threaded through holes into the GH behind the unit) and plug them in (the pump on a timer) and, providing the silicon on the fittings is cured, fill 'er up and make adjustments to the flow, etc. Move the plants into it (about 18 mature plants and 30 or so seedlings in smaller pots). Wish me luck! |
