* More than half of retailers intend to hire the same number of holiday-season workers as in 2001, a nationwide survey by Manpower, a temporary staffing firm, found. 34% expect to create more jobs; 8% said they would take on fewer employees. Chicago-based employment expert John Challenger, who also surveyed retailers about their holiday plans, is more pessimistic. He expects stores to reduce hiring this season, some by as much as 25%. Challenger said students, stay-at-home moms and a host of skilled, experienced workers are creating fierce competition for limited jobs this holiday season. * Vermeer's Garden Centre & Flower Shop in Welland, Ontario, was voted best garden center by Canadian consumers in October. More than 4,500 consumers voted for their favorite garden center at the Garden Expo in Toronto. 800.256.5656. * Lawn and garden products maker Scotts Co. posted a narrower quarterly loss, helped by cost cuts and strong consumer demand for turf fertilizers and potting soil. The company said consumer purchases of its branded products increased 10% for the year. * A widely loved fat cat is promoting garden and floral purchases.
