How much longer to cut grass with a Scotts reel mower?
Hi,
I was hoping to get some opinions on the Scotts' reel mower (manual). Currently, I use a 22 inch push mower to cut my yard ~10K square foot. It takes me a little less than a hour to power through it. Any guesses how much longer it would take with a reel mower? Thanks. Greg |

Greg, I thought I was going to use a push mower when I was much younger and
dumber. Trouble is, if your lawn is not very smooth and flat, IMO, it will take you double the time, and you will not have the clippings collected, and they will not be in 'leave on the lawn' condition. Just keep your rotary's blade sharp!! Chas |

How much longer to cut grass with a Scotts reel mower?
Thanks for the advice.
I realized when I was cutting the grass this weekend that it probably would be a bad idea with my lumpy yard to switch mowers. My wife and I had a lawn in Michigan,USA with over 12k sq. ft. we used a Scott's 20 inch classic. It took approximately 30 mins to mow. We now live in Pennsylvania and have a yard of appr. 8k sq. ft. and the entire yard is on a 46 degree incline. We still take less than 45 mins to mow, even with the hill. Modern reel movers are very lightweight and most have ceramic bearings. They are way lighter than a gas powered mower and much more manueverable. When we moved in to our current home, there was a mole problem with the associated lumpiness and soft spots. The reel mover (with its' trailing wheels) actually rides over these areas with much less difficulty than a gas mower. All in all, from our experiences, I would think you would reduce moving time by maYbe a third, while having a much healthier law due to the clipping action of the reel mower vs. the shredding typical with rotary blades. |
