I planted some cloves of Garlic last summer
from seeds and they went right through the winter. Now the plants are very big. When and How do you harvest them? They are starting to go to seed? Will they die and dry out in the ground? If I harvest them all--is there a special method to intertwining the stalks for a decorative bundle? |

If you want to dig garlic in the fall then pinch off the seed heads right
now. If you don't, the bulb below will not develop since it's busy making seeds up above. You have a choice, bulbs or seeds from each plant. I usually let a few of my elephant garlic go to seed because I like the way they look. The ones that I pinch the seeds off of I dig up as full heads of garlic in the fall when the stem has died and turned brown. I have some to eat and some to replant each fall. After the leaves fall and turn brown, you can dig them up. The leaves are often braided to hang as decorations. I snip off the flowers as they appear. Mine die to the ground during the summer heat, then sprout in late January. I have a row of them planted in front of the roses to ward off the aphids (but found that it is not so effective for this.) |

I just throw the stalks out, oh, that ball that grows on the end of the curly stem? Lop it off early so the bulb will get all the growth. |

As for a use of those "seed heads" if you truly love garlic snap them
off (it makes the bulb 30% bigger) and make garlic pesto. Use 6-8 tops, 1/4 cup peanuts, 1/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup parmesean cheese mix in the food processor and enjoy as a cracker topping. My children go nuts over this late spring treat! I am assumeing that this is rocambole garlic that folks are growing if there is the seed head. and makTom Randy wrote in message ... Quick related question. I have garlic bulbs in my kitchen, and I want to minimize the
sprouting that happens all the time. Any ideas? Should they be sealed in a plastic bag? In a ??dry?? drawer? Just eat them faster? -- R.I.P. Gregory Peck, June 12th, 2003.
