recommends planting peas in January. Has anyone planted peas in January? How
well did they do?

if the soil is cold they probably just rot but if your patch is small
seed is cheap and getting the jump on things is fun and worth an extra
sowing if the first fails

Howdy, madgardener here,
I have a friend who lives in Eugene, and even though my own growing
zone is 7a, here in Eastern Tennessee, I do know that you could plant
peas in January if you do them in a raised bed or elevated bed. The
extra height of soil allows it to warm up quicker, and gives other
seeds and plants the added advantage of getting an additional few
weeks of growing season. I know you're season is probably up there in
terms of 8 but with your unseasonable snows and cold, I know I've had
lots of luck in the past with raised beds. I hope this helps. If you
don't want to go to all the trouble of making a raised bed this late,
you can rake an area up to at least five or six inches like a berm and
it will do the same thing. Let us know how it goes. I also know that
SNOW PEAS will do well early. (I plant mine when I can in February)
madgardener now gardening in further northeastern Tennessee in
historical downtown Greeneville, Tennessee zone 7a where we're about
to get an Arctic blast...............

I read somewhere that you could start them in a peat pot and plant them
outside just as soon as they germinate. I'm going to plant some this seekend
and see how well they do - I have plenty of pea seeds, and nothing to loose!

I'm not all that far away from the Willamette Valley (just a bit
north) and the recommendation here is traditionally Washington's
Birthday or somewhere around the third week of February. You tend to
be colder in winter than my area (and also warmer in summer) so I'd
not be inclined to rush things too much. There is always a danger of
warm weather encouraging early germination and new shoots that could
be cut down by a late frost. Peas ARE a cool weather crop....but cool
weather, not the cold of winter :-)

Where do you live? How much snow did you get a few weeks ago? I'm about 20
miles south of the snow zone. Portland got a foot and a half, I got an inch
followed by a lot of rain. 20 miles north of me the roads were closed
because of ice, and by the time we reached Salem they were recommending
chains. Historically, when the snow moves in we tend to be about 5 degrees
warmer then the Portland area. Which is usually enough to keep us from
getting much snow. We've been a lot drier this year also. FWIW, I'm 90 miles
south of Portland.
