This Southern European creeper was named "dog-strangling vine" in
ancient Greek. The Romans gave it the same name in Latin. This shows the power of popular imagination: there is no record of a dog actually getting strangled. Modern botanists change its Latin name about every three years, which actually hampers the fight against its invasion of North America.
