How much emyacin to kill slime algae?

I have an overwhelming growth of slime algae in my 45g.! How much emyacin to kill it? I have aquarium products brand which is 200mg per tab and they suggest 1 tab per ten gallons but that is to treat disease. So far I've treated with 5 tabs for two days and what is left of the stuff isn't spreading but it isn't dying either. I'm on the verge of doing a teardown. -jim For best results you will need 4 or 5 days of treatment. You may want to try the 3 day blackout method instead and it wont cost you a dime. I did this recently and it worked great. Keep P N K and trace up until tank is covered, make sure everything is covered even down to the floor hoses, filter, ect. Make sure the cover is opaque and not translucent- you want cave dark. Shut off CO2 just before you throw the cover on (keep filters running). Time the blackout so that the cover is removed at night so that any critters can have an easy adjustment to morning light. Afterwards clean filters, suction out any mulm or derbris of note. If you have trouble finding a cover large enough 6 mil black plastic will do the job. Jim, if you use blackout wait until _all_ effects of the current use of erythromycin has abated, you don't want a massive dieoff of bacteria while the tank is covered. Good hunting. Keith Moore |
