Egyptian Walking Onions
Hi,
I planted some eg. walking onions and they are coming up. From what I have seen I will be waiting for some time before they get to the stage of setting the tops. When the time comes, can I just break off one of the bulbils on the top to use at a time? Is it necessary to take the whole cluster from the top? Roz |

Roz It's 8 or 9 months from planting before they are ready to pick. You could break off just one, but they are pretty small, about 1/2 inch, so you will probably need more then one at a time. Be sure to stake the bulblet stalk so they will reach their maximum size, otherwise the stalk will bend over from the weight before getting as big as it can. I run some trellis netting horizontally over the onion bed about two feet up, that way I don't need to stake each one. Lorenzo L. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." Hermann Goering |
