Thanks to all. My tomatos are growing in containers and consuming
unbelievable quantities of water, so keeping them happy is a challange.
Going to have to do a little more reading on calcium, though. How to get it
to the plants in usable form. Organic would be cool.

We had blossom end rot here on the coast and it seems that water was the
problem. Now we water the base of the plants only, no overhead watering.
Also, we have a cover (made of plastic)for the bed where the tomatoes are to
guard against rain or heavy dew. We've beat it that way for three years

I just found a single tomato with BER today. I had read previously , here
likely, that it can be due to calcium deficiency. I crushed
calcium/magnesium tablets (for night legs cramps, btw) and mixed with water
and watered the pot grown tomatoes and peppers. Will calcium carbonate from
a pill work for a plant?
We have very hard water here and I was surprised to think that calcium
deficiency would be a problem!
Only one "mater on one plant had it, so far.

Not calcium deficiency but calcium metabolism. The exact combination of factors
that lead to BER is unknown. Uneven moisture, cool spring nights, too rapid
growth--since it will go away all by itself there is no way to determine if any
treatments are effective--calcium is rarely lacking in soils but the plant can
not always make best use of it just why this is so is not clear.
