Moles VS Voles
Hello all,
I know that not everyone here will agree with my statement due to lack of knowledge but Moles do not eat plants. VOLES eat plants. Moles are Insectivores. their main diet is soil dwelling organisms such as grubs, earthworms, and insect larva. If moles are just making tunnels in your lawn which looks unsightly to you, get over it! Those moles are eating Japanese beetle larva and other far worse pests that would otherwise kill your grass and once hatched defoliate your roses. But, if indeed your problem is that plants are disappearing. Then you need to lay the blame on the Vole or even gopher. These two are Herbivores and as such like nothing better than to suck down your tender plant roots and bulbs.. Moles VS Voles
Absolutely true. Voles are much more like mice or rats that moles.

If moles are just making tunnels in your lawn which looks unsightly to you, get over it! The mole infestations in my area are so heavy that there may be 15 long winding tracks in a 6 ft. square area ... you walk across yard and feel/hear one squash in the tunnel from the weight of your foot. Try to walk in that area after a heavy rain and it's like stomping and sliding thru a bog ... and the soil erodes gradually off the hills. Try to mow that area and it'll bounce you off the seat of the riding lawn mower. Moles will tear flower bulbs to shreds getting all the grubs and larva around the bulbs and in amongst their roots so it doesn't matter if they are insectivores or not as the bulbs are gone. Moles VS Voles
We have moles, voles AND pocket gophers. The moles started tunneling
along our foundation one year and after a couple of heavy thunderstorms, we had some dandy gullies along the side of the house (the house is built into a hillside). We planted some daylilies along the foundation and haven't had a problem with it since. A pocket gopher got into our garden two years ago and ate all of my carrots. :-( Of course, I couldn't blame the gopher. He migrated from our hayfield and apparently decided carrots were better than alfalfa roots. Yes, they can all create problems. But I don't really mind having them around (except when that gopher ate my carrots). It just means that we live in the country (rural Wisconsin). LeAnn http://ruralroute2.com |
