The biggest drawback of the Sunset system is that it ignores minimum winter temperatures. Zone 40, where I am, is a band that runs along the southern shores of the Great Lakes to New England, but not right near the water (which is Zone 39). Zone 40 can encompass USDA zones 4 to 6. Ideally, to know what you are doing, you need to be familiar with both systems.
