[IBC] proposal
Hi all,
I have an idea on how IBC can improve the skills of bonsai beginners. I'm suggesting that people like Jim or Brent should record sessions of when they are doing anything with bonsai. We can then upload the video on to the IBC site and there members can download it. The sessions could be root pruning, propagation, or anything that beginners need to know. We can ask for donation from members to buy the camera if we need one. Thanks, Luc __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'm sure we have members everyone would enjoy seeing at work on a video -- however, I'M not one of them. ;-) I finished my spring repotting today with what I am certain is the least attractive three-tree group any IBCer produced this year. ;-) I'll have to redo it next year. ;-) This is a very good idea, however, and I'm forwarding this message to John Jarrett, our webmaster, for his comments. If feasible, we could then ask for volunteers to be vid-subjects -- though I don't think we want to film them when they "do anything" BIG ;-) . Colin From: "David J. Jim/Fellow list members I agree that this could be the next step that we take at IBC. Especially with the gallery as it is highlighted that working in two dimensions can be somewhat limiting and if the third dimension can be added by video .. so much the better. However there are quite severe limitations with the technology at the moment and things that would have to be addressed are as follows :- We would need a standardised video format to be used. There are at least five different video formats at present and each video format has a series of so called codecs which can be used. the video format/codec combimation dictates which video player the vi ewer has to have on his/her machine to enable viewing of the video. A more difficult problem to overcome is the problem of file size. Video files are VERY LARGE. For example ... a video of one minutes duration with sufficient resolution to be useful will be a file of between 10 and 20 mB. This will cause problems in two wa ys. Firstly ... IBC would have to pay for server storage space for these big files. Secondly ... downloading of these files for viewing will take a very long time for those members who have on modem access to the Internet. Here are come examples Type of Access Top download speed Time for download of 10mB Modem 5-6kB/sec 30 mins ISDN 20-25kB/sec 10 mins ADSL/Broadband 100 kB/sec 2 mins The majoiry of home users do not have anything more than Modem/ISDN yet But still ... this should not put us off :-)) Regards Steve Jones __________________________________________________ ________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. That (file size) was a concern of webmaster John Jarrett, both (I think) in terms of web space and managing it on his machine, if necessary. Since I know very little (read: NOTHING) about this technology (or video in general), Steve, maybe you and Dave Bockman could discuss this with John to see whether these are technologically surmountable at this moment in our web pages' lives. I've copied David and John with this message in case they don't see this on the list. Colin indicates he is willing. Maybe, rather than someone just filming him working away, he could script an on-line class; we could load teaser (but useful) 30-second clips onto the website, then, if sufficiently teased, folks could download compressed files that contain the video -- perhaps for a small fee (for Colin and for the IBC's time and web page). They'd uncompress and store on their own machines -- with all the legal caveats about resale, for private use only, etc. etc. etc. By scripting something, the dead time would be more easily edited away. We could actually break a class into downloadable segments; if someone wanted the section on soils and potting, get that. If they want wiring, get that. Or pruning and pinching, get that. Want it all? That would be available, too. Jim Lewis - - Tallahassee, FL - Our life is frittered away by detail . . . . Simplify! Want it all? That would be available, too. Approaching this from the perspective of a relative newbie, short close up videos of pruning, pinching, wiring and root pruning would be more useful than long videos taken from a long shot. This small work can be hard to see at a class or demo, and still images in books are useful, but the video would be even more illustrative. Plus at well under thirty seconds each they would be relatively small files. I really like the idea of integrating small short videos as illustrations into a series of online short courses. Use the video only where it is needed, viewing a tree in 3d can be done with gif89 or quicktime3d images. -- Philip S, Diamond (508) 740-0382 ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Evergreen Gardenworks++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions?
