[IBC] Stolen suiseki
I'm sorry to hear that Art had a stone stolen. That's always a bummer when
you realize that someone has ripped you off at a convention. Over the last few years I find this a common thing ( at least at my tables). I think that a lot has to do with how "easily stealable" your items are, as many of mine are. I "lose" something more and more often at shows and it is USUALLY a carving bit/tool of some type. If it can be easily wiped off the table and into a bag it seems it's fair game. A stone however is a little different! But, I imagine at a stone show it wasn't rare to see someone walking around with a stone! I've had people say to me " I can't believe a bonsai person would steal", uh, well, believe it! The idea of losing $20-60 , OR MORE after all your costs is bad enough ( for years I told myself that THEY must have needed the money more than my family) but, it's a real pain when you can't leave your booth to go see demos or eat or anything because you know something will stroll away! One thing to look forward to.....someday you'll catch someone!! I purchased it from Frank English, in California 20 years ago. I decided not to exhibit it in the Masterpiece Display, opting instead for a larger stone, and kept this one at one of my tables in the sales area. A week or two later at home I had a heart-stopping realization... the stone was missing ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Jerry Meislik++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? From: Internet Bonsai Club ]On Behalf Of dalecochoy Sent: Friday, February 14, 2003 11:00 AM To: Subject: [IBC] Stolen suiseki I'm not familiar with any "missing" finished/trained , expensive bonsai from conventions. I'm pretty sure Chase has had at least one, and possibly several, really nice trees (azalea as I recall) walk away from the Philly Flower Show. David J. I remember hearing that now. I think that was 5-7ish years ago? Of course I've heard of small and large thefts of trees from home/business sites. I remember Brussels' large loss about 10 years ago. But, small "five-finger-discounts" are common at conventions/symposiums. Plus, I wonder how often vendors have stuff stolen and never notice if they have lots of smaller items ( like me). regarding Art's loss..it was a few days before he noticed! And, that item wasn't small! It is such a shame that people would steal something like that. What is the
world coming to? I recently had 4 trees stolen from my home while I was away for the day so I know how the loss feels. --I crucified my hate and held the world within my hands-- Neal Ross-Marysville CA ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Jerry Meislik++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? Dale - I was sent this from my brother in Vegas not a week ago. . . stolen
bonsai. . . redir.asp?lid=0&newsite=http://www.gsbf-bonsai.org/GSBF/Alert.htmhttp://www.gsbf-bonsai.org/GSBF/Alert.htm At 11:00 AM 2/14/2003 -0500, dalecochoy wrote: ----- Original Message ----- From: "Liam" Subject: [IBC] Stolen suiseki (dalecochoy) wrote: The idea of losing $20-60 , OR MORE after all your costs is bad enough Liam said: And if someone stole an actual tree, think how devastating that would be. The worst loss would be not the monetary value of the tree, but its sentimental value, and all of the hours put into training and looking after it. Liam, I'm not familiar with any "missing" finished/trained , expensive bonsai from conventions. Stock, yes definitely and myself carving equipment. The most expensive thing I've lost is a DeWalt die grinder kit in Dallas last April. The kit retailed for $165. Over the years, many smaller ( but expensive) carving items. Last year I had a Samurai carver stolen at a show. It is much easier to walk out of a venfding area with a bag with a small item than it is with a fully developed tree. Finally, Money is money...whether it took a long time to make it or a short time! [To Arthur] I suppose one consolation if someone stole your stone would be to think that the thief obviously appreciates the value of it, even if they just want to sell it. I hope you find the rock somehow. Liam Liam, I don't think that's much of a consolation. If you are mugged on a city street and your watch and wifes jewelry are stolen I'd not care if the thief appreciated it or not!
