Default [IBC] Peroxide on root rot ?

Greetings all

I have a dear friend who's an expert Cypripedium grower.
He's owns a private collection of dozens of exotic plants that would rival
any collection in the world.

Yesterday we were discussing root rot, and what to do about it.
He told me that he routinely washes his plant roots with simple, store
bought, peroxide.
This apparently kills the root rot, and doesn't harm the roots.

Unfortunately, due to my "newbie" status, I routinely over-water my trees
and have twice induced root rot into a Chinese elm and a hinoki cypress.
I'm up to learning any secrets I can.

Comments ?

Hydrogen peroxide is a POWERFUL oxidant -- even the stuff
you buy at the drugstore. My limited experience with orchid
roots recalls tough, dry, woody things, not the very fine,
white juicy hairs we try to cultivate in our, always moist,
bonsai pots.

_I_ wouldn't rinse these in hydrogen peroxide.

I'll bow to someone with Nina's "rooty credentials," but not
to too many others' on this 'un.

Nina?

Howdy, Y'all! I'm here in Austin Texas for the Phytopathological
Meetings, and having a great time. Jim and Joey took me on a tour of
the Treaty Oak (looking very healthy), the botanical garden and a local
nursery. I understand that powdery mildew on J. maple is a big problem
this year in Texas, and I'm trying to find out more about the
situation- will report back. [Jim T: I got the plants! Thanks!]

Jim L. is correct- peroxide is powerful stuff, and the nursery products
with peroxides as the active ingredient (ZeroTol, for one), aren't
labeled very well to make people understand how dangerous they are.
They are useful things for cleaning nursery benches and cement floors,
but are useless in the soil, because organic material will neutralize
them pretty quickly. Soaking live roots in them may have some small
effect, but so would trimming the dead roots off by hand.

I received this from Walter Pall this evening:

Kevin,

you could do me a favor and copy this statement for the list:

Jerry,

when we talked about this interview I was under the impression that I was
helping many beginners and you would charge a nominal fee for distributing
it. I am really quite surprised or rather shocked about the style you are
using to sell the interview. This is wildest Hollywood style for low class
uneducated folks and sounds like someone selling snake oil. This is the
worst kind of salesmanship. Believe me, I used to work in marketing for very
renowned comanies. This is NOT good. This is not at all appropriate for this
interview which is basically very ordinary down-to-earth stuff. You are
selling it as 'secrets' in a totally inappropriate manner.

I herewith withdraw my approval to publish this and ask you to withdraw it
immediately.

greetings
Walter

I hope that the guy who posted originally is keeping an eye on things and
gets the message. I don't have his email addy to send to him direct, though
I doubt the address was genuine anyway.
