OK answer my own question. Googled around it appears they go to seed in
the spring, and even if the tops look OK the roots go to mush. Well
maybe they will serve as a bit of groundcover.

Remember that you can eat the tops. My small ones tops and bottoms made some
good soup last year.

This year mine are certainly smaller than I would hope, but we shall be able
to have some mashed celeriac with our Christmas dinner as usual.

Thanks - must try making soup from the tops. Some we bought as young
plants have impressive tops but only fibrous roots.
