IMO Polythene is too vulnerable to puncture and light degradation.
But you can (we did) make an excellent longlasting pond with a proper
pondliner material. Old carpet makes a good underlay.
Or you could bury some old rubber dustbins or barrels, to make small
ponds; still a lot of fun.
