Hello there, I'm a complete newbie to gardening & need to know if there
is anything I can use to kill quite a large area of grass & weeds. I
need something that is safe to use if you have kids & a cat & there are
cats that come into the garden. Please help me asap.

You could use a systemic herbicide containing glyphosate (Tumbleweed, for
instance). You will need to keep people and critters off sprayed areas until
it is dry, but then it is safe(ish). You can't expect it to be totally
safe; after all, you want it to kill something. It's not going to do that
whilst being benign.
NB: Glyphosate will kill *any* plant you spray/spill it on, whether by
accident or design, so choose to do your spraying on as wind-free a day as
possible. With very stubborn weeds, you may need a second or third
application.
