Hemlock might be a better solution. Spruce's are rigid and are subject to disease. At least you can trim hemlock, spruce also, but hemlock is more pleasing to the eye, especially if you are trying to hide something unsightly. Run up to the Adirondacks, a couple of hours,and see how they grow from seedlings, along the Sacandaga. I planted some in Charlotte, NC, dug in the mountains and they are doing fine. Besides if you have children around and they accidentally fall into a spruce you'll know it.
