In article , Martin says...

Someone once said that HM must
think most of the world smells of fresh paint!

Even when she opens a "new" building. They redecorated the 3rd floor of a
building where I worked when she officially opened it. The building had only
been in use 3 months. It seems to be a very British thing. I have been in
buildings outside UK that royals have opened/visited where nothing was done
except polish the floors prior to the visit.

I used to work for a company that produced clothing for M&S. Any
visitors from M&S were treated like royalty. On one occasion a
scaffolding tower was erected and someone spent two days vacuuming the
ceiling of the factory prior to a visit. Everyone was told to keep their
desks nice and tidy and clear of clutter etc. Things all got rather
silly.

It did no good in the end though. British made goods could not compete
with those from abroad. M&S switched more and more to cheap clothing
produced in sweat shops abroad and the eventually all the UK factories
closed.
