Hi Lisa,

The reason they talk about underlayment is
to keep pesky rocks from working their way
into the liner.
Anything will work. Old carpet (no nails ;-)
layers of newspaper, anything like that.
We used newspaper and old carpet for 3,000
gallons, going on six years, no problems and
we have rocks with a capital R in our yard.
