Bleeding hydrangea!

Last week I took some cuttings of Euphorbia characias wulfenii. As you
will know, euphorbias bleed copiously. Not being quite sure how to go
about it, I found an item from Gardeners World where Monty Don was
showing how it was done, and he dipped the cuttings in powdered
charcoal to stop the bleeding. Why that in particular, I don't know; I
would think any fine powder would do, as long as it was sterile,
possibly even flour.
Thanks very much. I can always use a pestle and mortar on some
barbeque charcoal :-)
